Gió Marconi in Milan is presenting a new exhibition by American artist Matthew Brannon, until June 3, 2021.
“Cold Shoulders / Foreign Affairs / Seafood Dinners / Power Vacuums / and The Last Gate at the End of a Very Long Terminal” is Brannon's third solo show with the Gallery.
The first time I saw his work was the 2008, and I was working as curatorial intern at Castello di Rivoli on “50 Moons of Saturn”, the T2 Turin Triennial of Contemporary Art directed by Daniel Birnbaum. Matthew Brannon was among the artists included in the exhibition.
I remember I was immediately struck by his printmaking, that recalls the traditional mid-20th century advertising layouts. Each silkscreen is conceived as a sort of still-life whose details are borrowed from a careful research into movie posters, ephemera, textile design and literature.
He’s a writer as well, so that the images are often associated to texts, with no boundaries between images and writing. “Image, then text. - he said - The first read should be well-dressed and familiar. The second, somewhat rude and discomforting”.
